Joe Pepitone was an American baseball player who made his name with the New York Yankees. The three-time MLB All-Star spent the first eight years of his career with the team. He was known for his aggressive defensive play at first base. He also won three Gold Glove awards during his career. Pepitone was born on October 9, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY. He died on March 13, 2023 at the age of 82.

Joe grew up in a working-class neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. He attended Manual Training High School before being drafted by the Yankees in 1958. He was a member of the 1961 World Series winning Yankees team that included Hall of Fame center fielder Mickey Mantle. The following year, he won his second championship with the Yankees and was named the AL MVP. Pepitone was also a highly regarded defensive specialist in the minor leagues where he mentored future Yankee great Don Mattingly.

While he was very successful as a professional baseball player, he had problems off the field. His free spirit and lack of respect for rules would get him into trouble in the majors. He was arrested several times for petty crimes and for marijuana possession. He also posed nude for a 1975 issue of Foxylady magazine. In addition, he was involved in numerous lawsuits.

Despite all of the negative aspects of his life, he continued to have success on the field and was very well liked within the baseball community. After retiring from playing in 1973, he became a coach for the Yankees. In addition to coaching, he was also a television and radio commentator. He also wrote a few books about the game.
