Shear began her career by competing in beauty pageants. Her talent was quickly recognized by Bob Hope. He cast Shear as a character in one of his specials in 1980. It was at this point that Shear decided to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. After touring the country, she opened for some of the biggest names in comedy, including Whoopi Goldberg, Caroline Schlitt, and Carol Burnett.

Shear has also co-starred in numerous sitcoms. These include “Happy Days”, “Married… with Children”, and “Full House”. Shear has also appeared on soap operas and other movies.
